This blog invites you on Sam's thrilling voyage from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, a journey undertaken in support of the charity UnLtd
Sam ArrivES in La Gomera, The Canary Islands
Sam Glover's adventure started with his arrival in San Sebastián de La Gomera, the Canary Islands, the traditional starting point for the World's Toughest Row since its inception in 1997.
In the heart of La Gomera lies the Blue Marlin, a bar that has become a rite of passage for all ocean rowers. Sam was the first to arrive this year, setting the tone for the rest of the ocean rowing family who were on their way. The atmosphere was charged with exhilaration with a hint of nerves as the soon-to-be ocean rowers flocked to the bar, eagerly awaiting the start of the World’s Toughest Row 2023

Sam HAPPY TO SEE sharks - Thanks to AI!
In a fun twist, Sam's friend used an AI app to create an image of Sam in the middle of the ocean, showing a delighted Sam surrounded by a shoal of digital sharks. The image served as a reminder that despite the serious endeavour Sam was embarking on, there was still room for a sense of humour and fun.
The Start Line
San Sebastián de La Gomera is more than just a beautiful location; it serves as the start line for the World's Toughest Row. Sam spent two weeks here, making final preparations, attending daily briefings, and completing last-minute sea trials. The 12th of December was the designated start date, and soon, Sam would be rowing into the vast expanse of the Atlantic, aiming towards the horizon.

Preparations and Launch
The week before the launch saw Sam working tirelessly, prepping his boat, organising his food, and familiarising himself with the tech onboard. The exact timings were yet to be announced, but the countdown had begun, and soon Sam would be pushing off from the marina and rowing towards Antigua.
Life in the Boat Park
The boat park was a hub of activity and excitement, filled with ocean rowers, future ocean rowers and families. It was here that Sam had to reorganise all his kit and food into a solo format. With the help of other team members, he calculated his calorie intake and made necessary adjustments.
Race Start DATE ChangeS
In a surprising turn of events, the start of the race was brought forward due to the changeable weather conditions. This showcased the teams' readiness and preparation, as they had to be ready to launch four days earlier than expected. For Sam, this was another sign that it was time to embark on his journey. The weather continued to be changeable and eventually the start date was fixed for the 13th December.
The World’s toughest Row 2023 Begins
Finally, the day arrived when Sam rowed away from the shores of La Gomera, starting his solo row across the Atlantic. The first few days were challenging yet thrilling. Sam kept his spirits high, finding joy in the smallest of things, such as the giant googly eyes his daughter had added to the R25.
How YOU CAN TRACK Sam's OCEAN ROW
Thanks to satellite technology and the YB Races app, followers could track Sam's amazing rowing journey across the Atlantic. With every stroke, Sam was moving closer to his goal. Despite the challenges and unpredictable weather conditions, Sam's determination and positive mindset kept him going.
The Bond of the OCEAN Rowers
One of the most heart-warming aspects of the challenge was the camaraderie among the rowers. Whether it was Sam meeting Guy Rigby, (the other half of the original 2021 Entrepreneur Ship team, ) or discussing the upcoming expedition with other team members, the bond of the rowers was evident.
SAM Faces Challenges HEAD-ON!
Despite the rough waters and strong winds, Sam faced every challenge head-on. Whether it was dealing with blisters on his hands from rowing or a minor head injury from a ‘wobbly toilet’ incident, Sam's spirit remained unbroken, and he was determined to stay positive.
Pushing the Boundaries
With each passing day, Sam pushed the boundaries of his endurance and willpower. Despite the harsh conditions, Sam was making good progress, even surpassing half of the four-member crews.
As Sam continues his journey across the Atlantic, he carries with him the hopes and dreams of many. His journey serves as an inspiration for all, proving that with determination, grit, and a positive mindset, one can conquer even the World's Toughest Row.
