As Sam embarked on his voyage, he was immediately met with testing weather conditions. Powerful easterly winds, blowing from the east towards the west, were forecasted to increase from an already strong 16 knots to a staggering 25 knots. This would make for challenging conditions aboard ‘Lucy’.
Despite this, Sam remained optimistic. He was well prepared for the challenges that lay ahead and was ready to face them. Even as the winds grew stronger, Sam's determination never wavered.
Journeying South
The fleet's course took a sharp turn southward as the race to Antigua began. The reason for this shift wasn't just because Antigua is located at a lower latitude, but also due to the incoming wind. The rowers needed to counteract this to avoid being blown off course.
This wasn't a simple race. It was a battle against nature, against muscle and wind. But Sam was unfazed. He knew that this was part of the challenge, and he was ready to face it.
The Good Ship ‘Lucy’

While the dolphins didn't respond to his calls, the experience was a delightful one for Sam. It was a reminder that he was not alone in his journey - he was sharing the ocean with its magnificent inhabitants.
A Sudden Setback: The Battery Dilemma
Despite the many joys, Sam's journey was not without its trials. One such challenge was when his auto-helm, which had been working overtime to keep ‘Lucy’ on course, drained his batteries to a dangerously low level overnight.
This was a serious issue. Without batteries, navigating would become significantly more difficult. But in true Sam fashion, he took this setback in his stride. He quickly switched off all non-essential systems and rowed without any technological assistance, hoping that his batteries would recover.
This incident was a testament to Sam's resilience. It embodied the spirit of The Entrepreneur Ship 2023 which is "Never Give Up". And true to his boat's motto, Sam didn't give up…and soon his batteries were fully charged again.
The Sports Cucumber: A Unique Snack Choice
Rowing across the Atlantic is no small feat. It requires immense physical strength and stamina, and to fuel his body, Sam needed to consume a high-calorie diet. But amidst the dehydrated meals and snack bars, Sam had a unique favourite - the humble cucumber!
Though it didn't provide as many calories as his other snacks, the cucumber was a source of freshness and hydration for Sam. It was a small slice of home in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
The Beauty of Sunrise: Savouring the Moment
Beyond the physical exertion and the mental challenges, Sam's journey was also about appreciating the beauty of nature. He often took moments to pause and admire the sunrise, marvelling at the stunning hues that painted the sky. These moments were a reminder of why he embarked on this journey in the first place. The Flying Fish: An Unusual Encounter
During his row, Sam started to encounter a variety of marine life. But perhaps the most unique of these were the flying fish. They would leap out of the water, gliding through the air for up to 45 seconds before diving back into the ocean.
Though it was strange, it was also a fascinating sight. It was yet another reminder of the wonders of nature that Sam was privileged to witness on his journey.

As Sam’s original plan was to row as a pair with his close friend Jake Chapman. ( Jake had to withdraw just before the race started) Jake's support has been unwavering. He's been closely following Sam's progress and even had a satellite call with him recently, expressing immense pride in Sam's courage and determination.
A Musical Motivation
Adding a touch of personal encouragement, Jake, who once convinced Sam to switch from the bass to a 'proper guitar', has crafted a unique guitar for Sam, inspired by the design of his boat. A RACE OF TWO SOLO ROWERS
For those following Sam's journey, a thrilling development unfolded. After briefly losing his lead to Elliot from Wave Wrangler, Sam regained the top spot, now leading by 5 nautical miles. This friendly rivalry adds an exciting competitive edge to the journey, showcasing the sheer determination and skill of these solo rowers.
